A traffic counter is a device that counts, measures, and classifies the traffic on a road. They are typically located near the roadside and can use various technologies to detect vehicles: 

• Pneumatic tubes: Rubber tubes laid across the road that release a burst of air when a vehicle drives over them. This closes an air switch that sends an electrical signal to the counting software. 
• Infrared sensors: Use beams of light to count vehicles. 
• Inductive loop detectors: Embedded in the road surface, these detectors sense the presence of vehicles through changes in magnetic fields. 
• Video-based systems: Use cameras and image processing software to analyze and count traffic. 
• Radar: A technology used to measure road traffic. 
• Lidar: A technology used to measure road traffic. 
• WiFi: A technology used to measure road traffic. 
• Security cameras: A technology used to measure road traffic
